Document Parsing (PDF Parsing)

What it is

Document parsing is the process of extracting structured information – including text, tables, images, and reading order – from documents such as PDFs, Word files, and presentation slides. It converts raw document content into a machine-readable format, typically Markdown or structured JSON, that downstream AI systems can reliably process. PDF parsing is a subset focused specifically on Portable Document Format files, which present particular challenges because they encode content as positioned graphical elements rather than semantically ordered text.

How it works

Document parsing typically combines several techniques. Layout analysis identifies the type and position of each page element – paragraphs, headings, tables, figures, and captions. Optical character recognition (OCR) converts visual text into machine-readable characters. Reading order inference determines the correct sequence in which elements should be read, which is straightforward for left-to-right languages but complex for right-to-left scripts such as Hebrew and Arabic, or for multi-column layouts. Modern parsers often use one of three architectures: vision-language models that process documents as images end-to-end, modular pipelines that chain layout detection with separate OCR and extraction steps, or black-box commercial services. The quality of parsing directly affects downstream tasks: errors in this layer propagate through the entire pipeline and are difficult to correct without re-processing the source document.

What it is used for

Document parsing is the foundational ingestion layer for enterprise AI applications that work with existing document repositories. It is a prerequisite for retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) systems, which require clean, structured text to build accurate search indexes. It is also essential for contract analysis, financial report extraction, medical record processing, compliance review, and any workflow where an AI system must read and reason over business documents. Parsing quality is especially critical when documents contain structured data in tables, are written in languages underrepresented in model training data, or originate from scanned rather than digitally produced sources.
