ACCEPTABLE USE GUIDELINES

AI21 Labs Ltd. provides open access to state-of-the-art language models that can be used to power a large variety of useful applications. We believe it is important to ensure that this technology is used in a responsible way, while allowing developers the freedom they need to experiment rapidly and deploy solutions at scale. These Responsible Use Guidelines apply to your use of any of AI21’ products, solutions and/or services (the “AI21 Solutions”).
In order to use AI21 Solutions, you are required to comply with our AI21 Solutions Terms and Conditions and with the following usage guidelines (all together the “Terms”). Provided you comply with the Terms, any applicable laws, and don’t harm yourself or others, you may use AI21 Solutions to power your applications. We reserve the right to limit or suspend your access to AI21 Solutions at any time where we believe these Terms are violated.
Usage Guidelines
1. General and Universal Standards. AI21 Solutions must not be used by you (nor by anyone on your behalf or under your authorization) and it is not intended to be used for any of the following activities:
1.1. Distorting or influencing an individual’s behavior or impairing their ability to make informed choices by using subliminal, manipulative, or deceptive techniques.
1.2. Exploiting vulnerabilities relating to an individual’s or a group’s age, disability, or socio-economic circumstances, including targeting or manipulating individuals based on these factors.
1.3. Creating emotionally and/or psychologically harmful content, including without limitation, the facilitation or promotion of any form of self-harm.
1.4. Contributing in any way to the distribution of misinformation, for example concerning a specific group or person, or in relation to conspiratorial narratives.
1.5. Compromising other people’s (and specifically children’s) privacy and/or the safety.
1.6. Evaluating, classifying or profiling natural persons or groups of persons over a certain period of time based on:
1.6.1. their social behavior or known, inferred or predicted personal or personality characteristics with the social score leading to detrimental or unfavorable treatment.
1.6.2 protected characteristics (such as racial or ethnic background, religion, political views, or health data).
1.6.3. Assessing or predicting the likelihood of an individual engaging in criminal activity based solely on their personal characteristics or through profiling methods.
1.7. Using the AI21 Solutions to power automated decision making where individuals may be denied benefits, refused access to a service or otherwise have their wellbeing substantially harmed based on protected characteristics or due to any bias.
1.8. Promoting or engaging in illegal activities, such as hate speech; gambling; facilitation and/or distribution of weapons or illegal and controlled substances; child pornography; human trafficking; or violating intellectual property rights; harassing, victimizing, intimidating, committing fraud, or sending spam; creating or disseminating of misinformation, promotion of self-harm, glorification of violent events, or incitement of violence or hateful behavior.
1.9. Use of biometric information:
i) Creating or expanding facial recognition databases through the untargeted scraping of facial images from the internet or CCTV footage;
ii) Categorizing or classifying individuals using their biometric data to deduce or infer sensitive personal attributes, such as race, political opinions, religious beliefs, or sexual orientation.
iii) Using ‘real-time’ remote biometric identification systems in publicly accessible spaces for the purposes of law enforcement, unless and in so far as such use is strictly necessary for an objective permitted by law.
1.10. Detecting or interpreting individuals’ emotions in workplace or educational environments, unless strictly necessary for medical or safety purposes.
1.11. activities where use or failure of the AI21 Solutions could lead to death, personal injury, damage to tangible property, or environmental damage, and includes without limitation life support systems, emergency services, nuclear facilities, autonomous vehicles, and traffic control.
2. Interaction Requirements. Your application may present content generated by AI21 Solutions directly to humans (e.g., chatbots, content generation tools, etc). In this case, you are required to ensure the following:
2.1. No content generated by AI21 Solutions will be posted automatically (without human intervention) to any public website or platform.
2.2. End-users must be notified that they are interacting with an AI machine/application and not with a human person.
2.3. Language models such as those accessible via AI21 Solutions may generate inappropriate, biased, offensive or otherwise harmful content (see our technical paper for an evaluation of bias in our models). You should provide a method for users to report generated text as harmful by implementing a “flag as inappropriate” button or some similar functionality to collect feedback and monitor these reports and respond to them appropriately.
